Ici, la vie est à son plus simple. Nous sommes ancrés dans Tyrrell Bay, une belle baie située à quelques milles de la ville principale de Hillsborough. Tout près, il y a quelques petits magasins dépanneurs et à tous les jours nous prenons notre marche et allons nous approvisionner. Pas question de faire une grosse épicerie une fois par semaine comme à la maison.
Il y a aussi Phil (photo) le pêcheur qui vient au bateau nous offrir des langoustes et du poisson. Simon, nous offre du vin et il y en a un autre qui vend des bananes, des citrons etc... Les langoustes coûtent 5.50 $ la livre et le vin à peu près la même chose pour une bouteille et nous l’aimons bien. Dimanche soir nous nous sommes payés un bon souper aux langoustes avec vin, le tout pour environ $20.00 canadiens. Pas si mal…
Pour les plus gros achats, nous allons à Hillsborough. Un taxi local nous y emmène pour la modique somme d’environ $5.00 aller-retour pour deux personnes. Ces taxis sont comme à Grenade, des petite vannettes Toyota. Il y a aussi des Nissan mais beaucoup moins. Il n’y a presque pas d’autres marques.
Nous avons remarqué que les taxis prennent des enfants après les classes et qu’ils ne leur chargent rien. Ils embarquent aussi des adolescents à l’occasion gratuitement. Un homme âgé à stopper un taxi et lui a remis de l’argent et des instructions qui disaient probablement t à qui et où le remettre. Une dame a fait la même chose avec un petit colis. Dans les deux cas, le chauffeur de taxi ne s’est pas fait payer. Parents? Amis? Je ne sais pas mais il semble y avoir beaucoup d’entraide sur l’île.
Au retour de notre marche journalière pour faire nos emplettes nous sommes complètement détrempés car la température monte toujours vers les 32 degrés en après-midi. Pas de problèmes car l’eau sous le bateau est claire comme du cristal et sa température est à 29 degrés C. Alors nous mettons notre masque et nos palmes et nous allons explorer les alentours tout en nous rafraîchissant.
Nous prévoyons demeurer ici jusqu'à lundi et ensuite nous irons à Union et Tobago Cays à une dizaine de milles d’ici. Tobago Cays est réputé pour être le plus bel endroit pour faire de la plongée dans les Antilles. On verra…

Life is very simple here. We are anchored in Tyrrell Bay, a nice bay a couple of miles from the main town of Hillsborough. There are a couple of small convenience stores nearby and we take daily walks to go buy some grocery and necessities. A big shopping trip to the mall, once a week like home, is out of the question here.
There is also Phil (picture) the fisherman who pays us regular visits to the boat to offer lobsters and fresh fish. Simon, brings us our wine and there is another local who sells bananas, lemons etc. The lobster costs $5.50 a pound and the wine is approximately the same and it’s very good. Last Sunday, we had a good lobster dinner with wine for about $20.00 Canadian altogether. Not too bad…
We go to Hillsborough for major shopping. A return trip for the two of us with a local taxi costs only $5.00. The taxis, like in Grenada, are small vans, mainly Toyotas. There is also a few Nissans but we seldom see other brands.
We noticed that the taxis will take children after school but will not charge them. Occasionally, they will also give free rides to teenagers. An old man stopped the taxi and gave him money with instructions which we assumed explained where to bring it and whom it was destined. A lady did the same with a parcel. In both cases, the taxi driver didn’t collect any money. Relatives, friends? We don’t know, but there seems to be a good cooperation among islanders.
Back to the boat following our long walk we are totally soaked since the temperature goes up to 32 deg C in the afternoon. Not a problem. The water around the boat is crystal clear and the temperature is 29 deg C. We don our tuba and palms and explore the surrounding to cool down.
We are planning to stay here until next Monday and then move on to Union Island and Tobago Cays. Tobago Cays is known to have the best diving in the West Indies. Will see…
